    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

    RBOC, late Feb. edition

    Saturday, 28 February 2009 9:03 A GMT-07
It’s been a busy two weeks since I last posted. Amy and I completely reworked the student introduction and a chapter of our book, which involved about 10 days of banging our heads against all available hard surfaces, a moment of inspiration, an

    Valentine's Day from a kid's pespective

    Wednesday, 11 February 2009 9:55 P GMT-07
I’ll take a break from badmouthing Valentine’s Day to tell this story. I was helping Lily make valentines for her classmates tonight and Lily said, “Mom, how about if I tell you about the best things about each person as I write the

    Valentine’s Day rant, part 2 of 2

    Monday, 9 February 2009 10:32 P GMT-07
Valentine’s Day doesn’t celebrate love as much as it celebrates co-dependency. Two people, one man and one woman, of course, who need each other. Fall apart without each other. Are incomplete without the other. Ick. Why is co-dependency s

    organizing for annual reviews, etc.

    Sunday, 8 February 2009 10:12 P GMT-07
Those ridiculous organizing skills I mentioned? Here are my secrets. Nothing too radical. I keep five files, one for each evaluation category (teaching, service, advising, professional development, reassigned time), and just drop things into the

    Valentine's Day rant, part 1 of 2 (possibly 3)

    Saturday, 7 February 2009 10:33 P GMT-07
When I was a kid and I got Valentine’s Day cards from my parents and friends, I thought it was a perfectly fine holiday. In my opinion, any day that highlighted chocolate had to be a good day. But once I got old enough to realize that Valentine

    things that irritated me today

    Thursday, 5 February 2009 9:07 P GMT-07
Adults calling mothers “mommies.” Gross. The only person who can call me “mommy” is my daughter and she shouldn’t do that for much longer. Pop-up-blocker-immune pop up windows. Grrrr. A telemarketer calling my classroom.

    does zero drafting work?

    Wednesday, 4 February 2009 12:45 P GMT-07
Breena commented Ok, I'll bite. I have been trying to work on getting my papers started earlier and not feeling like I need to have an argument to start with. The problem is, that zero draft doesn't seem to help me much, I still can't rea

    beginning of spring semester RBOC

    Tuesday, 3 February 2009 2:23 P GMT-07
For whatever reason, Metro has a number of serious deadlines stacked up in the first few weeks of the semester, which has made me feel like all work and no play lately. Well, ok, just a little play (cake photos). The big IRB deadline I was working to

    Randy's birthday cakes

    Sunday, 1 February 2009 1:49 A GMT-07
Baking again. For my friend’s husband’s birthday party, I made two flourless chocolate cakes, along with drunken cherries (fresh and dried cherries soaked in Amaretto) and Amaretto whipped cream. Here are the two cakes, along with the dru
