    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

What I'm doing & not doing this summer

    Monday, 26 June 2006 3:44 P GMT-07
The BlogHer conference (July 28-29) looks like it will be very cool. The "Room of Your Own" sessions sound particularly interesting. Of course, I won't be there. Nope. I'll be working on my dissertation. Sigh. The good news is that I have a

    must have son

    Monday, 19 June 2006 3:52 P GMT-07
At our yard sale last weekend, I got to talking to a guy about my age who came with his two-year old daughter. He was shopping for clothes for his daughter and we talking about parenting daughters. He looked like your typical kind-of-crunchy Denver d

    wrong target for breastfeeding ads

    Thursday, 15 June 2006 8:31 A GMT-07
I haven’t seen the ads this story refers to, but apparently, a new government ad campaign is aggressively promoting breastfeeding for babies, and mothers who don’t breastfeed are offended. I am a huge proponent of breastfeeding, so you might thin

    Mimosa be damned

    Thursday, 8 June 2006 9:27 P GMT-07
I ended up writing 3 single-spaced pages of my methodology chapter today. That may not sound very impressive, but consider that my daily average this week has been. . . . 0 pages.

    Thursday, 8 June 2006 10:19 A GMT-07
I was just beginning to feel somewhat motivated to draft my methodology chapter. I stayed up late last night rereading Auerbach and Silverstein’s Qualitative Date: An Introduction to Coding and Analysis and woke up ready to write. And then, as

    feeling a little broke

    Tuesday, 6 June 2006 1:59 P GMT-07
I spent over $800 on my eyes today. Yikes. The good news is that my yearly average for eye care is still less than $100/year. The bad news is that I could have done a lot of other really cool things with $800 besides buy new contact lenses, new glass

    another cool chick drummer

    Sunday, 4 June 2006 10:01 A GMT-07
Lily turned 4 a couple weeks ago and one of her grandfathers gave her a drum set. Lily seems to have a natural sense of rhythm and the knew exactly how to hold the drum sticks and use them from the get go. She's into Blondie and the Go Gos now, wanti

I've spent not enough time on my dissertation since early April and too much time on my dissertation in the last few days, resulting in complete disorientation and lack of focus. I can't see the forest for the trees--I can tell you everything about o
