    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

Finally, I have gotten done the task I’ve tried to do for three days: check student blogs. Every day this week when I’ve gone to check them, the College’s Internet connection has mysteriously gone down. But today, the College stayed

    AIDS Walk--please sponsor me

    Sunday, 27 August 2006 9:14 P GMT-07
Yes, I’m too lazy to write my own fundraising letter: In a few weeks, I’ll be participating in the 19th Annual AIDS Walk, which will raise much-needed funds for people living with HIV/AIDS and to prevent HIV infection in our state. New

From Culture Cat: Go here and look through random quotes until you find 5 that you think reflect who you are or what you believe. A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be. (Wayne G

    First week of classes

    Thursday, 24 August 2006 12:08 P GMT-07
The first week of classes included the usual chaos of switching classrooms, troubleshooting technology, and calming blog-anxiety. The good news is that 80% of my students' blogs work, and 100% of my students in ENG 121-012 now have chairs.

    a weight has lifted

    Saturday, 19 August 2006 6:06 P GMT-07
I wrote for seven hours straight today and (drum roll, please) finished the draft of chapter 4. I sent all 122 pages of it off to my advisor, and now I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off of me. Yes, I still have a lot of work to do, but chap

    I wasn't alone!

    Tuesday, 15 August 2006 7:55 P GMT-07
The Tuesday night before classes begin is always New Student Orientation. I volunteered to staff the Gay/Straight Alliance’s new GLBT Resource Center during the orientation (I’m a faculty advisor for the GSA). The GLBT Resource Center is

    two recent dreams

    Thursday, 10 August 2006 5:48 P GMT-07
    1. A pure white mountain goat bounds into our bedroom through an open window. After petting him, T and I decide we need to get him out. The goat bounds around the room and finally, we get him to bound out the window. Then, standing just right outside

    one case study down

    Wednesday, 9 August 2006 11:49 A GMT-07
Chapter 4 (case studies) is so huge that I’m sending it out in chunks. Part 1 is the thick description of the course, which I sent to my advisor late last week. Parts 2, 3, 4, and 5 are case study narratives. Each narrative is 20-30 pages long.

my EQ: just barely above average

Which is fine by me. I was sure I'd be told to get counseling. Especially compared to Lily, I often feel completely inept when dealing with my emotions. Lily is four and can already analyze her feelings and say something like this: "Mom, when I

    dissertation status report

    Friday, 4 August 2006 4:56 P GMT-07
Chapter one is drafted and simmering on the back burner. It needs to be revised before I send it to my committee, but I want to finish the other chapters before going back to chapter one because I feel like I need a better sense of the whole project

    one more pet peeve

    Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:00 A GMT-07
People calling butter substitutes “butter.” This especially irritates me in restaurants, where isn’t it illegal to call something butter if it’s not? When I’m at a restaurant and I am asked if I want butter on my toast,

    balance

    Tuesday, 1 August 2006 9:15 P GMT-07
I've been working through Rodney Yee's book Moving Toward Balance for about four months. The book outlines a 12-week yoga practice with each week focusing on something in particular (backbends, balances, etc.). I've taken about two weeks to complete

    pet peeves meme

    Tuesday, 1 August 2006 4:47 P GMT-07
From Jo(e) and Culture Cat: Grammatical pet peeve. Unclear antecedents or even worse—nonexistent antecedents. It absolutely drives me nuts when people use pronouns recklessly. It drives me nuts when someone is telling a story and then says so
