    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

if it's scheduled, it's planned--Blackboard, why did you plan this?

    Thursday, 30 August 2007 8:55 P GMT-07
Dear Blackboard, You’ve asked me to leave the worrying to you. Well, ok. I would like you to please worry for me about how to deal with “scheduled” maintenance that I was not informed of that occurred in the middle of the day in the

Singing in the.. . .public restroom and other stories about Lily

    Monday, 27 August 2007 8:31 P GMT-07
Lily and I went to Costco tonight. For some reason, she loves going to the restroom at Costco and she generally insists on going by herself. Tonight, while I was waiting on line to checkout, she went to the restroom. It was at least five minutes and

    Lily's room, painted

    Monday, 27 August 2007 12:24 P GMT-07
I’m finally getting around to posting the photos of Lily’s room, post painting. I ended up doing the stripes a little differently than I had planned. I got the idea to paint the whole wall white and then do the stripes freehand with a 3&r

the last 20 years summed up

My 20 year high school reunion is coming up. I’m not going, but I did decide to fill out the 20 year questionnaire and send it in. The questions are kind of weird. Why ask about a movie I could watch over and over but not ask about books? Why u

Yesterday was the first day of Work Week, the week of meetings and prep before classes begin. I always find Work Week incredibly frustrating—many redundant meetings, very little time for working on syllabi and class-related stuff, and an overal

    Friday, 17 August 2007 1:51 P GMT-07
I did a lot of reading this summer and want to blog about some of the books I read in the next few weeks, including Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond Baking Boot Camp: Five Days of Basic Training at The Culinary Insti

    how do you feel?

Campus email has been down for three and a half of the past five days. This does not bode well for fall semester. I took a Krav Maga class tonight that was fantastic. It was my first and will not be my last. I painted the ceiling and the inside of th

What a great feeling it is to have the Outlook calendar reminder pop up to remind me about an important deadline today (an article due to the editors) and be able to carelessly dismiss the reminder because the article was turned in last week. . . .

You Are 100% Feminist You are a total feminist. This doesn't mean you're a man hater (in fact, you may be a man). You just think that men and women should be treated equally. It's a simple idea but somehow complicated for the world to put

    parenting conundrum

    Thursday, 9 August 2007 1:36 P GMT-07
Something happened yesterday that has been bothering me to the point that I have a bit of a stomachache from thinking about it. Last night, Lily wanted to play with a girl who lives in our neighborhood—I’ll call her Tempestina. Tempestina

I will never force white walls on anyone

    Tuesday, 7 August 2007 6:35 P GMT-07
When I was growing up, I would have given just about anything to have my dad’s permission to paint my bedroom walls. My dad has always been a firm believer in white walls, and I grew up with what I thought of as oppressively white walls. As soo

How much more fabulous could today possibly be? My repaired Capresso arrived late yesterday afternoon, meaning that first thing this morning I had the best cup of coffee I’ve had in weeks. Weeks. I found this beyond amazing book cataloging Webs
